LOGISTIC CHALLENGES OF THE 2016 OLYMPICS
December 5, 2007 — Luncheon Program

Best Practices in Lean Warehousing

This past April Chicago was selected as the United States’ pick to host the 2016 Olympic Games. Chicago will now compete with Madrid, New Delhi, Prague, Rio de Janeiro, Rome and Tokyo, which are among the other world cities that have expressed interest in landing the 2016 Games. The final decision will be made in 2009.

As the U.S. Applicant City, Chicago will be bidding internationally to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games for the first time. The city’s plan calls for compact Games, providing an ease of access to all venues for athletes, media and the Olympic Family. In the plan, the Olympic Village will be situated on Chicago’s lakefront to position 88 percent of the athletes within 15 minutes of their competition venues. Urban renewal projects, along with the development of new venues and renovation of existing facilities, will leave a lasting legacy. Overall, Chicago’s vision as host of the Olympic and Paralympic Games is to both strengthen the Olympic Movement and unite the city.

Chicago offers a magnificent backdrop for Olympic and Paralympic athletes competition and for cheering spectators. The city offers a magnificent lakefront, 29 miles of shoreline parks and the city itself. It is all part of a design that was developed back in 1897 and one that still guides the city’s planning today. By placing these games in the very heart of Chicago, the city will give its global guests the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of the downtown parks and lakefront, and offer athletes from around the world a compelling and unique experience.

Chicago is truly one of the preeminent transportation hubs of the world. Our extensive rail, transit, and motorways infrastructure, combined with the world-class O’Hare and Midway International airports, make Chicago one of the most accessible cities for local residents and International visitors.

Tom Kerwin, FAIA, Managing Partner at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP will discuss the development of the plans for Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Summer Games. His presentation will describe the bid process and how Chicago will accommodate the Games
