What do you do if your supply chain needs more capacity and your warehouse is landlocked? Andrea Velasquez, Vice President of Business Development, A. Epstein and Sons, and Randall Tharp, Senior Vice President, Epstein Construction, Inc. described how A. Epstein and Sons worked with Albertsons Inc, the parent of Jewel Foods, to convert their existing 18 foot clear dry grocery warehouse in Melrose Park into a fully-mechanized 38 foot clear facility by raising the roof. Jewel's decision to raise the roof was driven by the fact that the Melrose Park campus was landlocked and they were faced with either relocating their operations or finding a solution that provided needed capacity at their existing site. The roof raising solution increased Jewel's dry grocery capacity by more than 18.5 million cubic feet.

When designed properly, your distribution network can be a comp-etitive advantage in service capability while providing an opportunity for thicker margins. But how can you be sure that your network is providing these advan-tages? How often should you re-calibrate your network against your current mix of suppliers and customers? Gregg Hague and Dave Forberg of Achieve Consulting will answer these questions, and share much more information on how different events in the lifecycle of a company can significantly impact the distribution network. Gregg and Dave will share several very clever techniques that they have utilized at their clients over the years that can help you as soon as you get back to the office.

As transportation becomes more like a utility to business around the world, more and more supply chain operators are faced with managing the movement of their products along "the last mile," or, said another way, moving products to the final consumer. Companies like UPS, DHL, FedEx, and others have demonstrated a strong business model to get boxes to individuals. But what if your product does not fit on a pallet? Or you want to eliminate a step in the handling of your product in an effort to become a more nimble, responsive delivery organization? Many companies are adopting fulfillment strategies that can help separate themselves from their competitors, and in doing need to better manage "the last mile." Our March presentation offered an industry expert's view on how to use "the last mile" to your company's advantage.
